Zoomed shot of Notre Dame, Paris.
I think these particular kind of ornaments are called Gargoyles (maybe Chimera is more correct), but i never knew why they are so common on gothic cathedrals.

This is just fantastic! I've never seen gargoyles so closely before, and the architecture on this building is just gorgeous. So many intricate curves and designs carved into solid rock.

It must've been absolutely breathtaking.

I think they are symbolizing the devil's influence on earthly life - which is why they are exclusively on the facade of churches, never on the inside: to contrast god's divine presence inside a cathedral. they are also meant to ward off evilness by reflecting it unto itself, therefore scaring it away. At least that's what Wikipedia has to say. ;)

Beautiful work, I love the gargoyles on the cathedral, it really looks like he just want to jump out. I like the grey in this one, really makes it fit.
